Meet 76-year-old Brian from Witham, who was the lucky winner of our Spring ’23 raffle. Having been a devoted Flight for Life Lottery player since 1999, Brian has shown unwavering support by purchasing many raffle and lottery tickets through the years. Brian couldn’t believe his ears when our Lottery & Raffle Manager, Carmel, called to deliver the incredible news. He had jokingly told his wife, Pauline, that he had thrown the tickets away, never expecting to win.
“I couldn’t believe I had won. I have supported EHAAT for many years, and we often see it fly over our house on its way to an emergency; we hope we will never need their services.”
We were thrilled to welcome Brian and his wife Pauline to our Earls Colne airbase recently and hand over his winning cheque. One of our volunteers, Ken, gave them a tour of our Visitor Centre, and they met Gaynor, our Clinical Services Manager, who thanked them for their support. When asked what he would do with his win, he said he would treat his family, especially his grandchildren!

In 2019, Angelica was working at a racing yard when a horse veered off track and charged through a set of railings. Thrown onto her back, she suffered serious injuries, including two fractures to her pelvis. She was in pain, scared, and in urgent need of help. That help came from Essex & Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT). Angelica was airlifted to King’s College Hospital by EHAAT’s critical care team, where she began a long and challenging recovery. But what happened after that flight is what truly makes her story remarkable.
Inspired by the crew who cared for her, Angelica made a life-changing decision to become a paramedic herself.
Six years later, she’s done exactly that. In 2025, Angelica graduated with a first-class degree and is now a newly qualified paramedic, supporting people through some of the hardest days of their lives, just as she once was. This summer, Angelica returned to EHAAT’s North Weald base but this time, not as a patient, but as a fellow paramedic. She was reunited with members of the clinical team who helped save her life. Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, Angelica not only received life-saving pre-hospital care, but went on to fulfil her dream of joining the profession that once cared for her.
During her visit, she stood beside a quote proudly displayed on the airbase wall, words she had written years earlier while recovering from her injuries. Back then, she spoke of her dream to one day become a paramedic. Now, standing there in uniform, that dream had become a reality. It was a powerful symbol of just how far your support and the simple act of buying raffle tickets can take someone.
Each month it costs in excess of £1,000,000 for us to remain operational and cover all charitable costs. Each HEMS team consists of a highly skilled pilot, co-pilot, pre-hospital care doctor and a critical care paramedic. The Charity provides advanced pre-hospital care across Essex, Hertfordshire, and the surrounding areas.
