Volunteering at EHAAT – Ray and Sue Cook

  • Volunteering since May 2009
  • Collect cheques on behalf of the charity
  • Look after a charity tin collection round
  • Sell handmade bird tables and wood crafts, tomato plants

We are Ray and Sue Cook. Twelve years ago, we started volunteering for Essex Air Ambulance (as it was then) after reading an article in a local newspaper about the charity. Since then, we have helped by receiving cheque donations, giving short talks, selling T-shirts at the annual motorcycle run, and looking after collection tins in shops and businesses.

We particularly enjoy selling merchandise at community events, talking to people about EHAAT. At these events, we always meet people who tell us how grateful they are that the air ambulance was available to help them or a relative/friend, at a time of need. This is very satisfying and makes our volunteering worthwhile. And we’ll also sell tickets for our Tombola, raising additional funds!

Every year we also sell homemade bird tables and homegrown tomato plants outside our house, in support of EHAAT. Last year was exceptional, in that we sold 25 bird tables and 121 tomato plants. As a hobby woodturner Ray also made and sold 17 miniature Christmas trees. So, although we were unable to attend any fund-raising events because of COVID-19, at the end of 2020 we were very pleased to be able to send a cheque for £1,050 to EHAAT.

Once things get back to some form of normality, we hope to be able to help the charity for many years to come.
