When asked what she would like for her 71st birthday, local Saffron Walden resident, Jenny Godfrey, gave an unusual response. Rather than presents, she asked for the money to be donated to Essex & Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT).

Jenny, who is blind and unable to walk lives in sheltered accommodation, where she is supported by her friends and neighbours. There is a real community atmosphere where she lives, and as her birthday approached she decided to fundraise in lieu of presents. As well as having a lovely day, she raised an impressive £500 which was given to EHAAT’s Head of Income Generation, Emma Barker, when she visited Jenny at her home last week.

Ms Barker said, “Jenny’s generosity is truly humbling and goes to show that no matter how hard life gets for some people, they still have the capacity to think of others.

“Here at Essex & Herts Air Ambulance we aim to save lives, by delivering a first class pre-hospital emergency medical service to the people of Essex, Hertfordshire and surrounding areas. We take the hospital to the patient, delivering advanced care to people who are very often experiencing the worst days of their lives. And any one of us could need this service at any moment.

“Without access to the National Lottery funding and with limited support from the Government, we continue to rely upon the generosity and goodwill of people like Jenny to remain operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So it was really heart-warming to hear how all of Jenny’s friends and neighbours had got together to raise funds in honour of her birthday. When we met, all of Jenny’s neighbours joined us to take photos and to chat about the work of the air ambulance. I was touched by the generosity of everyone present. Such a warm welcome – and such a great thing to have done. Thank you Jenny.”
