This year’s new and improved Summer Cycle Ride will take place in July with a new challenge in store for those joining in the fun.

The annual Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Summer Cycle Ride, in partnership with Welwyn Rugby Club, will take place on Sunday 1st July starting at the club in Hobbs Way.

A brand new 80 mile route has been introduced and thanks to supporters’ feedback after the 2017 event, the 50 mile and 20 mile routes have been changed to give cyclists more of a challenge.

The routes will take in the undulating hills of the Hertfordshire countryside and the historic towns, including St Albans. So gather your friends and family and enjoy the ride individually, as a team of five or as a family. The family route remains the same three mile circuit.

There will be plenty of water stops along the way, with some coffee stops too. Every participant will be congratulated with a medal at the end of their journey.

Jen Wall, Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Events Manager, said: “This year’s Summer Cycle Ride is bigger and better than ever before. Last year our supporters had some great ideas on how to improve the routes and we’ve incorporated these ideas into this year’s event. The new 80 mile route will be a big challenge for those looking for a longer cycle in the sun. This year we are also encouraging people to join together in teams to make the ride a more sociable occasion.

“I am sure cyclists will enjoy whichever route they choose – whether it is the new 80 mile route or the family-friendly three mile cycle – there’s something for everyone. We look forward to seeing everyone there!”

Registration for the event is now open. Early bird tickets for all routes cost £17 and are available until Saturday 30th June. There are separate options for teams of up to 5 cyclists and a sponsored registration ticket so these no need for additional sponsorship. Ticket prices on the day are £20. Up to three under 14s go free when with a full paying adult.

Registration on the day opens at 7.30am for the 80, 50 and 20 mile routes, with the ride starting at 8am, 8.30am and 9am. The registration for the family ride opens at 9am, with the cyclists setting off at 9.30am.

Money raised from sponsorship is vital to the success of the Air Ambulance. About 400 cyclists are expected to take part in the Summer Cycle Challenge this year. If each cyclist were to raise between £30 and £50 in sponsorship, the total raised would fund five life-saving missions.

The Summer Cycle Ride is being held in partnership with Welwyn Rugby Club who will be providing a BBQ and refreshments after the ride, so bring your family and friends along to enjoy the fun.

The Summer Cycle Ride will start at Welwyn Rugby Club in Hobbs Way, Welwyn Garden City, AL8 6HX.
