As a charity we rely on your generosity to keep us flying, please donate whatever you can today. Every penny raised really does help us to reach people in their moment of need. Thank you.
DonateEach year, around 40,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the UK, with huge opportunities for improving survival.
Our crews see firsthand the impact on patients and their families. It shapes our relentless focus on advancing pre-hospital care in cardiac arrest. We invest in research and innovation with one goal – improving patient outcomes.
This week we’re excited to be sharing some of that research at the European Resuscitation Council’s flagship Congress in Milan.

The ERC Congress – Resuscitation 2026 brings together clinicians, researchers, educators, and healthcare leaders from around the world to share the latest evidence, best practice, and innovation in resuscitation, to help improve patient outcomes and save more lives.
We’ll have the opportunity to test and advance our thinking with some of the best minds in medicine. There are huge opportunities to improve care for patients in cardiac arrest and this is one of our key strategic objectives as a service.

We’ve been chosen to present nine research projects at the 3-day event, which include:
- Exploring the effectiveness of the cascade model for teaching CPR at a population level and sharing the impact of our own CPR Smart ™ programme, where we give teachers and sixth form students the skills to train the wider school community
- Sharing early results of the innovative cardiac arrest desk pilot from the East of England Ambulance Service which provides live video support via the GoodSAM platform during 999 calls to improve bystander CPR
- Presenting our work on a novel intervention that synchronises artificial ventilation with compressions during resuscitation
- Sharing our team’s work on intensive resuscitation using complex physiological targets, now that we are able to monitor the blood pressure from inside the body rather than outside

The team from EHAAT is led by Dr Gareth Grier, who leads the Centre for Excellence. Gareth said:
“For a charity of our size to have nine research projects chosen speaks to the quality and value of the research we’re undertaking. We’re constantly testing new ways to improve pre-hospital care which have the potential to finally move the dial on outcomes”.
