Air Ambulances UK has announced the shortlist of nominees for its 2022 Awards of Excellence.

The annual awards celebrate and recognise the specialist lifesaving skills and commitment of those working tirelessly within and in support of the air ambulance community, and EHAAT has been shortlisted in the following four categories.

Breaking Barriers

Essex & Herts Air Ambulance and Great Western Air Ambulance Charity have been shortlisted in this category, which recognises an air ambulance charity or individual, who has demonstrated exceptional, practical commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in their workplace.

Critical Care Practitioner of the Year

Awarded in recognition of an air ambulance practitioner who has demonstrated excellent clinical standards in delivering the best possible quality of care to patients, Critical Care Paramedic, at Essex & Herts, Adam Pitcairn, has been shortlisted alongside Lee Hilton from Devon Air Ambulance, Pete Appleby from Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, and Fay Pollock at Midlands Air Ambulance.

Innovation of the Year

Again Essex & Herts Air Ambulance is shortlisted with Great Western Air Ambulance Charity. This award is for an innovation which has been launched and is delivering significant beneficial impact for an individual charity or air ambulance sector in the last 12 months.

Doctor of the Year

Essex & Herts Air Ambulance’s Pre-hospital Care Doctor, Amy Hughes, has been shortlisted alongside Ian Mew at Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and Mike Hughes, at Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance. This award is for a doctor who has demonstrated excellent clinical standards in delivering the best possible quality of medical care to patients.

Young Person of the Year

Alfie Lowther, 12, has been shortlisted alongside Jack Jinkerson for East Anglian Air Ambulance and Bradley Staples for Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance. Alfie, who has autism, raised £260 for EHAAT by selling fruit salads to his neighbours throughout the school holidays and he’s continued finding creative fundraising ideas. This award is for an outstanding young person (aged 6-18 years) who has made a significant contribution and/or has accomplished something fantastic for their air ambulance charity in the past 12 months.

The Independent Awards Judging Panel consists of trauma specialist Professor Karim Brohi, Debra Alcock-Tyler, CEO the Directory of Social Change, Tim Fauchon, British Helicopter Association Chief Executive and Mark Doherty, West Midlands Ambulance Service Director of Clinical Commissioning and Strategic Development. The judges deliberated long and hard over some very difficult decisions due to the excellent quality of nominations.

Simmy Akhtar, Air Ambulances UK CEO said “Congratulations to all those who have been shortlisted after long and hard deliberations from our independent judging panel all of whom have volunteered their time to support the recognition of our air ambulance community.  Thank you to all those who submitted awards nominations and we look forward to welcoming colleagues to our in person Annual Conference and Awards later this year”.

The winners will be announced at the annual awards ceremony being held at Edgbaston Stadium, Birmingham on the 14th November.
