Essex & Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT) is asking the people of Essex and Hertfordshire to help its crews continue delivering a 24/7 life-saving Helicopter Emergency Medical Service during the Covid-19 pandemic by making sure they have the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) they need to work safely.

EHAAT needs to raise £50,000 to cover the cost of providing PPE for its critical care teams for 6 months.

The charity’s critical care teams are continuing to attend road traffic accidents, cardiac arrests and medical emergencies across Essex, Hertfordshire and surrounding areas. The charity is making sure they are as safe as they can be while they are working, and having appropriate PPE is a vital part of that.

Clinical Director Stuart Elms said: “Our Pre-hospital Care Doctors and Critical Care Paramedics are working in a demanding environment and knowing they are protecting themselves, and our patients, by having the correct PPE is a huge relief.

“We are working incredibly hard with our NHS Partners to help transfer patients where needed. We are using a variety of resources to provide this vital transfer assistance as well as continuing our normal pre-hospital critical care service. This may see a transfer team dropped off by helicopter and moving a patient by land ambulance as our other team deal with a serious road traffic collision.

“We are working hard to keep our level of care working around the clock, but we still need the support from the people of Essex and Hertfordshire to help us do this. If you can, please help us continue this vital work.”

Sterile, disposable gloves are essential in ensuring no contact between our crew and their patients during treatment.

A single use protective suit costs £7 each per crew member per mission, we anticipate a cost of £84 per crew per day.
Mask (ffp3 standard) £10
A single use specialist mask to protect our crew from Covid-19 when treating our patients. £10 each single use, we anticipate a cost of £120 per crew per day.

Goggles £14
A single use pair of goggles minimises exposure for our crew from Covid-19 when treating our patients. £14 each single use, we anticipate a cost of £168 per crew per day.

Powered Air Respirator System £3,263
The majority of our crew can wear the fftp3 masks, those unable to shave (for close fit) for health or religious reasons can use this system which consists of a filter – to protect our crew when treating patients.
