Excitement is building ahead of one of Essex & Herts Air Ambulance’s (EHAAT) flagship fundraising events.

Registration is now open for the charity’s annual Motorcycle Run and Harwich Family Fun Day which takes place on Sunday 10th September 2023.

Last year’s event was cancelled due to the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, so EHAAT encouraged its biking community to join in with the ‘I did it My Way’ campaign, and to ride out solo in their own time. However, it will be full throttle ahead for this year, and if previous years are anything to go by, the event is expected to attract thousands of bikers, who will all come together to take part in the 60-mile trip.

Supported by EHAAT’s long-term partner, global logistics company Woodland Group, registration for the Motorcycle Run is now open at https://ehaat.org/get-involved/events/motorcycle-run/.

Emma Barker, Head of Income Generation at EHAAT, is delighted that the run is back.

She said: “The Motorcycle Run and Family Fun Day celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2019, and saw over 3,500 bikes taking part, raising thousands of pounds for the charity. This year, for the first time, we are starting the run from our airbase at North Weald Airfield.”

Bikers are asked to arrive from 8am, with staggered departures kicking off in groups at 10am. The run finishes at the Quay in Harwich, where they will be waved on by local dignitaries, the EHAAT team and spectators. The free family fun day will take place on the Green in Harwich and has something for everyone including games, live music, exhibitors and refreshments.

Emma continues: “Bikers are a really key supporter group for us, partly because they are aware of how important the air ambulance service is. It is a great day to get together with so many of the biking community, thank them, and raise awareness about the life-saving work we do as a charity. The helicopter will also land in Harwich if available on the afternoon.

“Over two decades, this event has developed into a really special community day and is one of our key fundraising events of the year. Although safety and riding appropriately is taken very seriously, and riders take part at their own risk, we want to inject a bit of fun and amusement into the day. So, we encourage the wearing of fancy dress, as long as the correct protective equipment is worn including helmet, leathers and gloves.”

Bikers can pre-register online to book their place by visiting https://ehaat.org/get-involved/events/motorcycle-run/. On the day registration will also be open from 8am at the start of the route, North Weald Airfield.
